A Valuable, Well-Written Book

In "Change Your Brain, Change Your Body" Dr. Amen explains how he has used SPECT imaging to study the blood flow and activity patterns in the brain. SPECT is an acronym for single photon emission computed tomography.

He offers many examples of how he has used SPECT to obtain critical information about the brain function of his patients, and determine the best treatment to help those individuals to overcome a wide variety of problems, from depression to obesity to colds and headaches. The book makes use of illustrations of brain scans taken before and after treatment at Amen's clinics. He clearly explains how he interprets these scans, and how he determines the appropriate treatment for an individual.

Dr. Amen presents 15 solutions to assist you in boosting your brain to enable you to attain and maintain the kind of body and sense of well-being you have always wanted. Among the many benefits that can be derived by learning to love your brain and apply the easy-to-follow solutions are increased energy, sharper memory function, and relief from unwanted stress.

Sounds to good to be true? Not really. I can attest to many of the strategies and techniques this book offers because I have used them and taught them with amazing results for four decades. What's really new and different about Dr.Amen's approach is that he is employing some recently discovered scientific diagnostic equipment such as SPECT along with his unique treatments.

Back in the 1980's, I presented health conferences at the University of Minnesota and other colleges featuring "pioneers" in using the brain/mind for healing, and maintaining good health. Participants in those conferences included Norman Cousins, O.Carl Simonton, Bernie Siegel, Deloris Krieger, Norman Shealy, Raymond Moody, Gerald Jampolsky Karl Menninger, etal. Dr. Amen is to be congratulated for building on their work and currently being on the cutting edge of discoveries and treatment in this field. The world could use more like him.

This is a valuable, well-written book, and deserves five stars.

Pretty good.

What I liked about it was the readability of the book. It presents bio stuff very well for the general public. At the same time, I also felt it cheapens the value of real science to some extent. Still a good book on understanding that our brain is well integrated with the body and some practical guidance for better health and better life. People who keep themselves somewhat informed should know this from various sources. I'm a yoga practitioner and yoga philosophy says body, mind and spirit are all intertwined - for centuries, not decades. If you like this book, you'll probably like Deepak Chopra's Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old, written in a pretty motivational style with some good exercises. You might also like Sunil Sheoran's Mylife Framework: A Model For A Successful Life Based On The Yoga Principles. This one is not for masses, but a no BS guide on how to live well with yoga thoughts, more on life, not much on heath. Good luck.

This really works!

I have been struggling with weight-loss for the past 8 years. I have tried everything from diet pills to hypnosis. I am a veteran so you would think I already had the background to exercise properly and eat right, but this simply is not true. After I had my children, something in me changed. I no longer wanted to deal with life, and it was almost as if I was stuck in a depression state without any exits. I purchased the audio-book version of Magnificent Mind at Any Age: Natural Ways to Unleash Your Brain's Maximum Potential by Dr. Amen, and was impressed from the start. My husband and children noticed the difference in me after I started taking the St. Wort and L-Tyrosine supplements. I was on GABA already for a different reason, but the combination of these three items helped regulate my mood.

Then this wonderful book came out. I was eager to read it since I already had success with a previous book by Dr. Amen. I immediately put a lot of ideas into action. For instance, I maintained my intake of the supplements, plus I found a way to get back into exercising. I love to do research on my computer, so my husband brought me a special stand for it. This way I can exercise on my stationary bike while working on my computer at the same time. This motivated me to continue on with other positive things for my body, like eating more fruits and vegetables too. This book will go into detail about how to improve your attitude (brain) in order to affect a positive change in your life. Just to let you know, I went from 251 @ 5'8" to 228 in eight weeks. I achieved this by riding my bike slowly while reading this book, and/or working on my computer. Order your copy today, because I have read this book four times already and I learn something new every time.

Amazing Book!

Dr. Amen's new book, "Change Your Brain Change Your Body", is a great book to have as a reference on hand to anyone who has struggled to lose weight in the past. It presents scientific reasoning behind why individuals have such a difficult time when trying the latest and most popular diets but it is written so that you do not have to be a medical doctor to understand it! Once you read this book, you will be able to understand how your particular brain functioning will help you to lose the weight and gain a more healthy lifestyle.

As a Neuropsychologist, I have found it very valuable to help many of my patients deal not only with weight issues, but also hormonal imbalances, anxiety and depression. Understanding your brain type and how is can affect so many different aspects of your life is critical to the first steps in recovery. The chapters on the skin, hormone and skin solution are fabulous! A lot of my patients suffer with sleep issues, are stressed out and think in a very negative way. This book is fabulous in that it explains why these issues are key factors not only in the way you feel emotionally and cognitively but why they affect your weight as well!

I would definitely recommend that every therapist have this book in their bookcase and every patient have one at home!

One Major Flaw

The major flaw in this book is that it assumes that all change is good, should be enjoyed, and should be adapted to. It also makes an assumption that people need to adapt like mice, except that I have never seen a mouse "move another mouse's cheese." I personally have not witnessed mice controlling other mice, manipulating other mice, or oppressing other mice.

In real life, change can be good or bad pending on perspective. Take slavery for example. According to this book, a person who becomes a slave through force should adapt to change and enjoy it, because someone moved the cheese (the person who forced them into slavery or the global economics of cheap labor). In real life, no one wants to be a slave, but some people do not mind forcing others to slave for them (so those who become enslaved should adapt for them). So my question to this book is: Why can't someone choose the cheese that is right for them? People make choices everyday, and doing something in your best personal interests should be one of those choices, rather than being forced to adapt to a change someone else desires you to adapt to.

Who Moved My Cheese Book (Great Condition)

I needed the book for my seminar college class and I was hoping to save some bucks. I looked on here and found the copy for some change and shipping and handling. I was a little skeptical because of the low price and I thought I would receive the worse. Yet I was glad to be proven wrong. The book arrived a little late yet I wasn't in dire need of the book right away. It was in great condition, all pages in tact. I honestly can tell you there was nothing wrong with it whatsoever. This process proved to me, though its rare, you can get a book you need, for less than $5, have it arrive in a resonable amount of time, and have it like-new condition. This experience was probably the best I have ever had at Amazon.

A Valuable Parable

Take a simple idea, put it into a parable and print the book for all. This is the premise behind Who Moved My Cheese?

For the book to mean anything, the reader has to be honest with themselves as to how they see their own personalities fitting in with one or more of the four characters in the story, and how they adapt - or don't adapt - to inevitable change.
In the 21st Century corporations who do not change with a changing situation will soon be outpaced by the adaptable organizations who see the advantage of strategic change and are always on the outlook for newer, better, and more economical means to succeed.
In personal relationships, those who are not continually aware of the growth of themselves and their partner, and who do not renegotiate their relationship on a regular basis, are doomed to face problems. Considering the divorce rate this seems to be a problem already, especially when couples are citing irreconcilable differences as grounds for dissolving a relationship.

The cheese is just a metaphor for something we value such as a job, or a relationship, and when that concept of value changes, how do you deal with it? Do you take advanced notice of changes and take preventative measures to ensure continuity in some form or do you hold on to 'the cheese' until there is nothing left to save?

The book contains examples told in narrative form about people discussing the concept of change and how they managed, or did not manage the impact of the changes, and how they were going to rectify the situation.
The book itself can be read in about 30 minutes, but the life lessons that endure could change perceptions and attitudes for a lifetime.

A MUST read for anybody undergoing a life change or is seeing the handwriting on the wall that their current corporate or personal situation may be changing.

A Great Book

This is a great resource for people who suffer from any type of chronic (long-term) health problems. It is based on the author's experience with thousands of people who have participated in a course called the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program at the Univ. of Massachusetts Medical Center. Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness is intended to be that program rolled up into a book.

The book's tool is mindfulness meditation- a form of meditation originally developed in the Buddhist traditions- defined as a moment-to-moment awareness. Through mindful meditation, one can gain new kinds of control and wisdom in their lives. The book is very "hands on", so don't expect to just read it and be done with it. For example, you'll be doing things such breathing exercises or yoga postures (I can also recommend Exercise Beats Depression as another good resource for those struggling with depression).

Since the mind plays a factor in stress-related disorders, and very undertreated in Western medicine, I feel like this book will fill a much needed niche for many people. With over five-hundred pages, there's plenty of wisdom here to suck up.

An essential read

This classic explores mindfulness in detail, and elaborates on the practical application of mindfulness to improve our lives. It brings mindfulness out of the monasteries and into real life, which is exactly where it needs to be and what the Buddha wanted.Mindfulness meditation is a practical tool that can benefit us with the real challenges of life. You might also like to read the in-depth exploration of the theory and practice of mindfulness by Dr Peter Strong in 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation.'

Learn how to help yourself rather than just suffer

The authors explain how much of our suffering/stress comes from merely reacting to unpleasant situations, often in habitual ways of which we are no longer consciously aware. Beginning with the practice of Mindfulness Meditation, the authors share practices that help us to to be aware of our reactions, without judgement of them. This gives us back the choice of how we want to deal with the perceived problem, which is often diminished in severity just by being realistically and objectively regarded. The book goes on to present various excercises, such as the full body scan, to examine the physical effects/affects of our pain and ways to see it differently. This is not any kind of self-hypnosis or mind trick, and does not pretend to be a cure. Rather it is a positive and loving way to examine and live with the myriad stresses, pains and disappointments that sometimes seem to overtake our lives.

Praise For WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO

"Once thought to be in the domain of genes, our health and behavior have recently been revealed to be controlled by our perception of the environment and our beliefs. Gabor Maté, M.D., skillfully blends recent advances in biomedicine with the personal insights of his patients to provide empowering insight into how deeply developmental experiences shape our health, behavior, attitudes, and relationships. A must-read for health professionals and lay readers seeking awareness of how the mind controls health."
–– Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., cellular biologist

"The interviewees’ stories are often touching and haunting. . . . Maté carefully explains the biological mechanisms that are activated when stress and trauma exert a powerful influence on the body, and he backs up his claims with compelling evidence from the field. . . . Both the lay and specialist reader will be grateful for the final chapter, ‘The Seven A’s of Healing,’ in which Maté presents an open formula for healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress."
–– Quill & Quire

"Medical science searches high and low for the causes of cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a host of other conditions. Yet it often ignores one of the most pervasive factors leading to illness: the hidden stresses embedded in our daily lives. In this important book, Dr. Gabor Maté combines a passionate examination of his patients’ life histories with lucid explanations of the science behind mind-body unity. He makes a compelling argument for the importance of understanding stress both in the causation of disease and in the restoration of health."

For everyone who is concerned about their health

This book is fascinating! It has information that we all know intuitively but is good to see all the studies that have been done that confirm the facts. I am reading it very slowly, even putting it down to read a novel, then picked it up again. It is intense but forces me to look at how I relate to all those I love.

Rating :

It's not a self-help book

I agree with the many positive comments made by other reviewers. This is not a self-help book, it's a discussion of the ramifications of stress (as a physiological phenomenon with distinct patterns within the body) for the lay person. The author discusses his experiences and observations with his patients as well offering a highly readable survey of the current research in psychoneuroimmunology.

I think that one of the reasons the author does not offer solutions to the reader is that he's well aware that there are no easy solutions. To change unconscious patterning that's been in place since childhood requires a great deal of motivation and an excellent therapist, or perhaps powerful spiritual guidance. No one is going to be able to shift their own patterns of stress just by reading a book.

But it's a fascinating view of how our environment as children becomes a part of us. The more people who understand the true extent of a child's vulnerability, the better chance any individual child has of getting at least some of what they need to develop a strong, healthy psyche (and body).

When your body says "no"

If you think that your body might be trying to talk to you via physical symptoms, you will probably find this book very interesting. My body started saying "no" two years ago, in the form of a serious auto-immune disorder. After becoming ill, I began turning over every stone to find a pathway back to good health. The search turned up many helpful solutions, but I started to sense that the most important "medicine" I could take was recognizing when my body was saying "no" (by manifesting symptoms) to something I was doing and to stop doing whatever was causing the distress. I realized that my body had been saying "no" for years, but at a volume that I was able to ignore. This health crisis had turned the volume up enough to grab my attention -- and I knew that my ways were going to have to change. I was going to have to start putting self-care at the top of my to-do list.

Soon after having this insight, I found out about this book and immediately purchased it (for, as the saying goes, "when the student is ready the teacher will appear.") The book validates my intuition about what has been going on with my health, and suggests some areas that I can pursue to continue healing. To a point, I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book ought to provide more constructive solutions, though. Those of us who are dealing with life-limiting, and sometimes life-threatening, health problems are looking for concrete guidance, in addition to gaining the insights provided in the book. Nevertheless, I found it a worthwhile and helpful read.

Editorial Review :

In 1990, Jon Kabat-Zinn revolutionized the way millions of people handle distressing thoughts and feelings by writing Full Catastrophe Living, the book that introduced mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to the public for the first time. In A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook, mindfulness experts Bob Stahl and Elisha Goldstein adapt Kabat-Zinn's groundbreaking program into an accessible workbook format. Readers turn to this book once a week for eleven weeks, gradually improving their ability to relieve intense stress and reconnect with the present.

The workbook invites readers to participate in formal and informal practices and use fill-in exercises to reflect and track their progress. After each weekly session, readers can apply the techniques they learned that week into everyday life, gradually learning to replace stress-promoting habits with mindful ones. The audio CD bound with this book offers extensive and helpful supplemental material that readers can listen to anytime to receive a refresher course on MBSR techniques and useful guidance for incorporating these techniques into their days.

Bob Stahl and Elisha Goldstein have done a great job in making the art of mindfulness and its cultivation through MBSR practices accessible to a public readership at a time when interest in both is rising exponentially in our society due to the increasing stress and speed and anxiety of our lives. A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook will be a valuable resource for all those wishing to develop and / or deepen an embodied practice of mindfulness to heal body and mind, and to restore a degree of sanity, balance, and delight to their lives and relationships.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. author of Full Catastrophe Living, Wherever You Go There Your Are, Coming to Our Senses, Arriving at Your Own Door, Everyday Blessings

Inspired by their work as teachers of the research-proven Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program, the authors have provided a step-by-step approach to bringing this scientifically grounded approach into your daily life. Mindfulness has been demonstrated to effectively help us live with less stress, fear, and anxiety and to cultivate more ease, connection, and well-being in our lives. practical and accessible help for stress and anxiety

If I had to identify one quality that separates this book from the rest of the mindfulness resources in the self-help aisle, it's that these pages are so practical and can't help but provide the reader with plenty of "Aha!" moments. Reading through the chapters and exercises, I appreciate all the research that Goldstein and Stahl studied, material that illuminates how mindfulness exercises can alter and help shape your brain to be more optimistic and resilient. But what won my trust is that they have both been stress cases themselves at certain points in their lives, and can therefore communicate with empathetic language. They both know, on a very personal level, how stress can disable a person. Much like Kay Redfield Jamison, the famous psychologist who suffers from bipolar disorder, they speak both as expert and patient.

I understand mindfulness as forcing a bit of time and space between a situation and your reaction, or recognizing the snowball of thoughts that's forming in your mind before it becomes too overwhelming to sort through yourself. Goldstein and Stahl quote Vicktor Frankl, psychiatrist and holocaust survivor: "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

Although mindfulness techniques aren't able to rescue me out of an acute, severe depression, if I diligently adhered to all the wisdom contained in Stahl and Goldstein's book, and designated a time of the day to do all the exercises, I could save myself some considerable heartache and headache.

Why?

Their mindfulness exercises allow the reader to take some of the files off of her cluttered and disorganized desk because the files relate to the past or to the future, and the present tense is the only one she should worry about now. According to the authors, mindfulness is about sticking to the here and now and banishing all judgment. It's also about breaking the job, day, or situation down ... into small parts, in order to better manage it.

Goldstein and Stahl's workbook uses a strong motivator for readers to learn the beneficial habit of mindfulness, and that is accountability. When you write things down and record your progress, you become accountable. Maybe that's why my kids hate homework so much, come to think of it. So what they have done for us is set up a system by which we can challenge ourselves to better integrate our body, mind, and soul. Or at least that's the plan.

I recommend this workbook to anyone who is stressed out ... um ... everyone I know.

Rating :

Easily applied by therapists or individuals

"A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook" is an excellent resource for either therapists to use with clients, or individuals interested in integrating mindfulness into their lives in a simple and effective way. The MBSR workbook by Stahl and Goldstein incorporates all the common elements of effective mindfulness based therapies (Fielding, 2009). The authors have done an excellent job of describing a fundamentally experiential approach to managing stress and related difficulties. The workbook provides very helpful exercises and worksheets to help the novice or more experienced practitioners in furthering their practice in the service of reducing suffering.
