There are plenty of books about coping with adversity. But isn't until now, with WHO SURVIVES, that we discover the human factors that determine survival. It's a combination instruction book and security blanket that blends compelling true stories with cutting-edge science to deliver some of the most important lessons we'll ever need to learn.

The book will:
--list the most important traits necessary for survival (e.g., adaptability, tenacity, faith)
--identify the 5 types of survivors
--debunk myths (like only the strong survive), explore the frontiers of survival science (How much strain and punishment can a human body endure?), and introduce readers to counterintuitive thinking (Ever heard of posttraumatic growth?)
--provide a Survivors Tool Kit, including an online test that measures one's Survivor's Quotient

Each one of us eventually joins the club of millions who face life's inescapable tribulations and tragedies. WHO SURVIVES is the companion we need to prepare us for and guide us through the worst.

Too Much Religion

This book had promise, and has some interesting stories and statistics. But by half way through, every survival story was turning into mystical powers, and God, and Faith. In these stories, it is never questioned why God saved a military pilot, but let the navigator die. Why did God save a particular person in an airline crash or nightclub fire, but he couldn't be bothered to save the rest (let alone prevent the disaster in the first place)? I guess they were evil, or it was "His Plan". Yawn.

If you don't mind being preached at, or if your faith is so flimsy that it needs to be bolstered by a mass marketed book, then this is a good read. If you are sick of these stories, don't bother.

Didn't learn much about survival

After seeing the great reviews here, I was excited to dig into the book. I am about 1/3 way through and I'm finding it difficult to continue. Perhaps my expectation were off course. I was expecting a book to give insight into survival skills in different situations. All I got were stories of people who had a desire to live but it was very skimpy on tactical advise. So far the most I got out of this book is where to sit in a plane to perhaps survive a crash. I hope the rest of the book gets better... if so, I will update my review

Review written for and published on www.luxuryreading.com

Biking in Foothill Ranch, California, Anne Hjelle is attacked by a mountain lion. She survives the attack. JAT Flight 364 explodes in the air over Czechoslovakia. The only survivor is Vesna Vulovic, a flight attendant, who plummets 6 miles to the ground and lives. Brian Udell is forced to eject from his plane going faster than Mach 1 at sea level. The impact breaks both his legs and severely dislocates one shoulder, rendering that arm useless. Despite having only one working limb, Udell manages to inflate a raft, climb aboard, and wait to be rescued. In the Gulf of Mexico, Tim Sears falls off of the cruise ship Celebration wearing nothing more than his boxer shorts, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Without any floatation devices and without anyone coming to his rescue (the ship's crew never knew he was missing), Sears literally swims for his life over a course of 17 hours where he is finally rescued by a Maltese ship.

What all these people have in common is that they are all survivors of situations that would normally be fatal to the average person. Ben Sherwood, journalist and author, sets out to discover why some people live where others would perish in his book The Survivors Club. Sherwood takes the reader on a tour of the remarkable and the astounding while all along collecting research into the sciences of extreme first aid, faith and prayer, fear, will power, adversity, and luck. He includes countless tales of survival and death defying feats as well as advice from rescue workers and scientists who investigate the various forms of death.

The Survivors Club is more than just a study in the art of survival; it is also a reference manual. Sherwood invites the reader to take a quiz that will provide him/her with a "survivor profile." This individual profile identifies the test taker's "survivor type" (fighter, believer, connector, thinker, or realist) and details the top three survivor tools in the test taker's arsenal. The reader is then invited to join an online community of survivors where members can share their stories and "build a private support group of friends and family."

Ben Sherwood's The Survivors Club is a must read for those who desire a long life and wish to be prepared for all eventualities in life.

For all of the haters out there

For starters I only rated this book with 1 star so that the chance it would be read would be greatly increased. My real rating is 5 stars. Nearly every negative review has failed to realize that starting a business that runs itself it merely the vehicle to be successful but not the point of the book. It is a complete re-organization of what you have be taught life has to be like. It is true that not everybody can do this, good, less competition for me, but the only true reason is because they are not laying the foundation that is necessary for your business model to work. That foundation is getting over your fears, being persistent and truly believing that no task is impossible. For all my morals this morals that people, just as spies have to do bad things to make good things happen you can do great things for this world if you have time and money to make it happen. As many have said before me you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. For those of you who still want to give it a try a good start is reading all of the negative reviews. This is a great source of information from all of the losers who this will not work for and teaches you what not to be. I'm not rich, but I no longer slave away and have equaled my previous income. I do agree that this is not for the weak.

A good gimmick

If nobody noticed while reading this book, the guy started his dot-com business in the dot-com era. Fortunate for him, unfortunate for the rest of you. It's still possible to be a successful entrepreneur, but the advice given here is really motivational, nothing else. The first half of the book is full of stories of his successful life style, which has nothing at all to do with entrepreneurship. The advice he states about applying his Pareto methods to customers is worthless, really. He states that 95% of his revenue came from 5 people, and he simply ignored the rest of his customers. All of a sudden he states his income doubles, which are from new customers. Did this advice work? Of course not. These methods have absolutely no way of affecting new customers. We are also led to believe that these same '5' people are 'still' the biggest customers and that they didn't 'leave'. There are so many unanswered questions to this business, it's just pathetic to witness people believing it's as easy as the author makes it out to be. After you've given up your job and are waiting for your first few successful sales, you might want to have your children live with a relative who can feed and cloth them till it happens while your on your 4 hour work week. Oh, that's right, you'll really be working a full week like everyone else, including the author.

Also I don't know if anyone else noticed but the guy works more than 4 hours a week, and you can find traces of this throughout the book. Let's ignore this fact and just say if everyone were to take his approach and work 4 hours a week, all the major economies in the world would collapse. Give this book to any developer or administrator even, and you'll be sure to get a laugh. Without the people working their asses off to create and maintain these services we use, this guy would be cleaning floors with a tooth brush.

So for anyone interested in this book, just realize the title is misleading. The author is inexperienced with start ups, as striking it lucky young and early. If he were to have more experience under his belt with several successful start-ups, you would have a very different book (with a title that wasn't misleading hopefully). Go to your local bookstore and check it out first. It isn't a big book and you can easily skip the first half of the book because it's filler. I'm sure the majority of reviewers who rated this book so high are just living it up with their 4-hour work weeks.

Handbook to entrepreneurship

The book does read like a mishmash of Tim's addiction to travelling, his frustration with success and money early on and him stumbling upon a successful nutrition company. However this book also sounds like a real unedited account of his life which is why I like this book. This is not too planned to be a certain type of book to appeal to certain type of audience. It turn by turn account of his adventurous life. It is also fair criticism that all Tim did was to establish only one company and he might have gotten lucky. But it is also true that he sold himself as a expert on nutritions and appeared on many TV shows and create d aTim Ferriss brand. And all the other tid-bids if information are priceless...right from outsoucring companies info, internet pay-per-click ad campaign etc. I have listened to his many videos on youtube and on his personal blog and his most recent talk at the TED, and this man is really brilliant and this book just gives a glimpse of his mind.

Rating :

Genius in looking at things in new ways and helping you see.

Tim's specialty is being able to look at a situation, reverse engineer it and see what, how, and why it is the way it is. Once he knows that he focuses on those factors to do what no one else seems to do. The Genius of this book is he helps you to do the same. The reading, his assignments and his questions help you to look at your own life and you then see what was once thought impossible... actually possible. I loved it, and if it weren't for this book I'd still be at my old job and not my own business. I'm not at a 4 hour work week yet... but I'm getting close!

Nick Petersen Review

The Secret
Do you want to lose weight? Have a great love life? Be successful in your job? Get rick quickly? According to Rhonda Byrne, we can all have everything we want, by living the rules of life, given to us in her novel ¬The Secret. The Secret was written in 2006, and has become a worldwide phenomenon. With Oprah as a supporter and testimony giver of the realness of the secret, people all over the world are reading, and trying to learn how they too, can have all the things they have ever wanted in life.
In her book, Byrne focuses on teaching the reader about the power of the mind. She explains that with constant positive thought, we can steer our lives in the direction that we want them to go. She believes and teaches that humans are eternal energies, constantly emitting and attracting energy, whether it is good or bad. The book teaches the reader that by focusing on only the good things in our lives, and the good around us, we will only attract good. She explains that thinking bad thoughts about others or about situations does nothing to hurt others, but it in turn, attracts negative energy towards us. Through the power of thought, Byrne attests "There isn't a single thing that you cannot do with this knowledge. . . . The Secret can give you whatever you want" (p. 11).
The Secret gives many examples of how living this way of thinking has helped many people throughout history. Byrnes herself came across the secret to life, when she was having a hard time in her life. She began practicing positive thought, and began willing good things her way. After many instances of her positive thoughts coming true, she began to write down her experiences. These written experiences have transcended into the phenomenon that is "The Secret."
This book has been very helpful to me in my life. Not only in attaining the things I want to attain within my family and my business, but also to help me live a happier life. With the help of this book, I have learned to become more "Zen" and less stressed out in daily life. This in turn has helped me to become a better father and husband.
Don't get me wrong, I did not agree with everything Byrne teaches in the Secret. From a religious standpoint, I find some of what she writes to be very blasphemous and sacrilegious. She claims that we should thank ourselves daily for our lives, where I feel we should thank our Father in Heaven for our lives. On page 164, Byrne states "You are God in a physical body. You are Spirit in the flesh. You are Eternal Life expressing itself as You. You are a cosmic being. You are all power. You are all wisdom. You are all intelligence. You are perfection. You are magnificence. You are the creator, and you are creating the creation of You on this planet." I struggled with some of the contradictions to my beliefs that were listed in this book, but was able to change the wording in my head, to fit my own beliefs as I read it.
Despite the contradictions to my religious beliefs, I feel that there is something to be said for positive thinking. The Secret, if followed closely, and practiced, truly can change your life. I have become a better family member, a better business owner, and a better friend, because of the secret. I would recommend reading this book to learn how you can have money, friends, and success, when and how you want it.

The King of Common Sense

After following Gladwell in the New Yorker, and enjoying his most recent work "Tipping Point", I've been eagerly awaiting the release of his newest piece, "Blink". Gladwell is the king of common sense, many of the points he addresses are based on what we already know. But I suppose that's the exact reason I enjoy his work so much. What many of us, not excluding myself, sometimes fail to recognize about the current understanding of the brain and human reactions - Gladwell saturates himself in. Secondly, being a lifelong fan of the Getty - I was pleasantly surprised with his remarkable insights into the museum as well.

Rating :

A guide to rapid thoughts

With the its pages rich in contemplation into the instantaneous decision-making capabilities of the human mind, Malcolm Gladwell's Blink is a great introduction to the art of rapid cognition. Gladwell excels in introducing his theory with major, real-life studies, but also leaves room in his novel for views against his own theory. Through each of the organized chapters of his presentation, Gladwell succeeds in changing the way the reader looks at the world. Towards the end, he even challenges the reader to take the lessons to heart and to make positive changes in their future decisions. The book itself comes through exactly as described: "The power of thinking without thinking." It is the presentation of Gladwell's personal experiences and research that cater to the cause of challenging the reader's view of the world. Having coined certain terms in his theory, such as "the blink", "thin-slicing", and "listening with your eyes", Gladwell's philosophical approach to rapid thought processes is bound to be accepted within the bounds of our society by some point. Overall, this book was a great read and definitely provided great insight into the way people have been thinking without knowing for years.

Rating :

Worst book that I never read

Alright, I did start it, but I could not finish it. It was that boring. Don't make a snap judgment though, you should read it for yourself and realize that anyone without a brain can get published these days. A former boss who liked to drink and employ the services of hookers gave our team this as a Christmas gift which were some of the many Blink judgments he made.

Rating :

Recognizing how to know...without thinking; A very useful tool!

Having taken sociology as a minor in college, I personally found this book to be quite intriguing as Malcom Gladwell did an outstanding job in explaining and providing examples of how people react with one another or find themselves in certain situations from the perspective of utilizing the unconscious portion of one's mind. Simply put, the title of his book, says it all! His scientific approach to rapid cognition, along with other studies such as the race IAT, will leave you dumbfounded as you try to attempt to either shape, confirm, or deny your own opinion of how your perceive people of different races when you associate them with different words. I have always loved learning about people, social groups, and knowing why people behave or respond they way they do with other people and/or other cultures. This book just takes it a step further by explaining how people's rapid intuitiveness and instant judgment often provides a more accurate conclusion than what they would have otherwise spent large amounts of time thinking about only to surface with poor judgment aka the wrong answer/solution (in some cases....not all). If anything, this book will make you a bit more life smart/people smart/street smart in being more mindful and understanding of how people behave and make judgments...especially when judgments occur in the BLINK of an eye!

Rating :

Ausgezeichnet!!

One of the most facinating books I have ever read. If you want to know what people are really thinking, despite what they may be saying, read this awesome book.

Editorial Review :

Now You’re Talking!
Do you want to be bulletproof at work, secure in your relationship, and content in your own skin? If so, it’s more important than ever to be aware of what your body is saying to the outside world. Unfortunately, most of what you’ve heard from other body language experts is wrong, and, as a result, your actions may be hurting, not helping, you.

With sass and a keen eye, media favorite Janine Driver teaches you the skills she used every day to stay alive during her fifteen years as a body-language expert at the ATF. Janine’s 7-day plan and her 7-second solutions teach you dozens of body language fixes to turn any interpersonal situation to your advantage. She reveals methods here that other experts refuse to share with the public, and she debunks major myths other experts swear are fact:

Giving more eye contact is key when you’re trying to impress someone.
Not necessarily true. It’s actually more important where you point your belly button. This small body shift communicates true interest more powerfully than constant eye contact.

The “steeple” hand gesture will give you the upper hand during negotiations and business meetings. Wrong. Driver has seen this overbearing gesture backfire more often than not. Instead, she suggests two new steeples that give you power without making you seem overly aggressive: the Basketball Steeple and the A-OK Two-Fingered Steeple.

Happy people command power and attention by smiling just before they meet new people.
Studies have shown that people who do this are viewed as Beta Leaders. Alpha leaders smile once they shake your hand and hear your name.

At a time when every advantage counts—and first impressions matter more than ever—this is the book to help you really get your message across.

Good Material, but The suggestions and exercises leave a lot to be desired

This book rocks with it's content and what it's teaching. I learned how to norm my boss and already asked for some great stuff! I love that. The Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes idea is great. She really breaks it down pretty well.

The BIG downside is she seems to have little respect for the readers time and finances. The first chapter says you need about 2 hours a day, for 7 days. I thought that was doable. But what I didn't expect was all the crazy suggestions: Buy a Nintendo, Go Skydiving, Sign up for Belly Dancing Lessons, Sign up for Salsa dancing, etc... Also if you were going to do this in 7 days and go to work, how would you get into any of the classes for find the time to go skydiving all within your "7 day makeover/"

She also mixes it up with home alone exercises and wome work out in public. I thought it would be more observation inside and out. But it requires: Staring at a painting at a museum for 30 Minutes for example... this takes at least an hour and I'm supposed to read and do 2-3 more exercises? Get a friend to come over and rollplay while you videotape, this one would take at least an hour... SO I find it's just not realisic or well thought out so I find that frusterating.

Bottom Line though, the content is good, just don't expect to be able to do her exercises the way she suggests unless you have a lot of extra cash and tons of free time...Oh and a video camera and friends that are available at the drop of a hat.

Pretty saavy stuff.

I've been a student of body language since 1967 when I read an article about signs women give off when they were looking for or are interested in a man. While that turned out to be completely wrong, You Say More Than you Think: A 7 Day Plan for Using The New Body Language to Get What You Want by Janine Driver is a sure fire outline for mastering the "unspoken" language we all converse in and use everyday.

Organized in chapters that correspond to Days, topics include The Belly Button Rule (day 2), Work Your Naughty Bits (day 3), Move to the Right Side (day 4), Power Gestures (day 5), and perhaps the most useful to me The QWQ Formula (day 7). Also very useful are the perhaps hundreds of photographs provided that demonstrate the points. I also liked the included "7-Second Fixes" and "Power Team Turnaround" sections that are scattered throughout the book.

You Say More Than You Think reminds a just a bit of a text book (not in a bad way) with inserts and demonstrations included that are extremely helpful.

If you're interested in effected communication and using what you have in the most effective way, then this is a book you'll want to spend some time with.

Peace to all.

An incredible book and an incredible program.

When I worked with Janine as a member of the Body Language Power Team (that's me on page 201), I was amazed at the audacious goal of putting the incredble program into a book. I thought, for sure, that some of the meat of the program would have to be left out.

Then I read the book.

Not only did Janine manage to fit every ounce of information into the book in a fun and easy-to-read way, she added more information on top of it. Burn all of your other body language books. The NEW body language is the only thing you need to know. My life has changed so much in the time since I worked with Janine, and if you follow the program in this book, you won't be able to help but make similar progress yourself.

New fun at work

Ms Driver suggests a series of exercises to make her concepts stick. It is fun to make conscious choices about what I project and to watch my colleagues in meetings. It's a quick read - and I found myself trusting the authors' experience and advice. Bottom line, I have told three people about this book already.

Lots of Helpful Tips

Janine was the keynote at my organization's conference a few years back. After seeing her speak, I've started gain a real interest in body language. Out of all the books and information I have read or seen, this is definitely one of the best. After purchasing it a few days ago and reading through it, I've found a large amount of simple but surprising tips and tricks. One of my favorites is the the belly button rule, it helps me read other people im interacting with, while at the same time helping me focus my attention on the person I'm talking to. After reading the book, I have come to find that I may have been sending a lot of the wrong signals with my body position, the rules and other information gathered from the book has started to change my interactions with people.
