Editorial Review :
You could pray, or meditate, or dream, or visit a shaman, or a minister, or a hypnotherapist. With so many routes into inner consciousness, why write? Of all the ways to get in touch with God, as you understand God... to hear the small, still voice pointing you in the right direction... why take the time to write?
One reason: it works. It works amazingly well. If you want to engage in a vibrant conversation with the wisdom that dwells just a hair below your conscious awareness, write. Write every day, at approximately the same time, with passion, honesty, and the intention of speaking with and listening to the voice within.
Janet Conner was escaping a terrible situation of domestic abuse. While trying to figure out how she and her son could live and how they could eat, she realized she had hit rock bottom. With no other advisers, she listened to her own inner voice, which told her to start writing. As she did, Janet's inner voice gained clarity and strength, and she felt an incredible connection to the divine, and almost immediately miracles began to happen.
Today, research scientists in psychology, physics, biochemistry, and neurology are providing peeks into what consciousness is and how it works. Their findings give us intriguing clues as to what is actually happening in and through our bodies, minds, and spirits as we roll pen across paper. Writing Down Your Soul explores some of this research and instructs readers how to access the power and beauty of their own deepest selves.

A must read .. for anyone who finds mediation hard..
If you have read and appreciated Julia Cameron's book The Artist way but never really got into writing morning pages or like me.. started and dropped them) this book is for you. It which explains why writing every day at the same time is so powerful through inspiring stories, and scientific back up. It provided the inspiration to get me back on track and appreciating connecting with my higher wisdom via writing every day.
I always found meditation hard .. too much going on in my head. This book shows an alternate and very powerful way to connect with my higher (whatever one wants to call it - Janet Connor is very careful to keep it open to believers in all traditions and none).
Janet is a real joy ... this book can show you a simple technique to make a big difference to your life. Give it a go ... and then spread the word!

Open Up and Follow Up Your Soul's Inner Voice
Janet Conner is an expert in coaching others to access that inner voice which leads to the miraculous powers of spiritual and ancient beliefs.
The inner voice, self discovery, a step by step approach on how to open up and let your inner voice be heard, are detailed in the book and gives you a practical guide to help you 'activate and listen to the extraordinary voice within'.
'Turn it on, tune in, and turn up the volume.'
You'll be amazed at what you discover, for in finding that inner voice you'll realise it really 'speaks' out to you by making you reflect on why recurring patterns happen, what blocks your thinking to progress forward to changing those patterns which aren't conducive to a better lifestyle and then whether you resort to a 'waiting room' to rest for a while, before you regain your composure.
Very effective in the approach taken.
'This is one of the most effective methods of psychospiritual growth available'. - Larry Dossey, MD, author of Healing Words and The Power of Premonitions.

Write, Listen, Learn
"There is a Voice inside you. There is a Voice inside everyone. Whether you hear it or not, the Voice is there. Whether you acknowledge it or not, the Voice is there."
In Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within, Janet Conner gives her readers her method for connecting with that Voice.
The Voice is one's Higher Power, and can be named whatever makes one comfortable with It, or as Conner says, whatever It wants to be called. Suggestions over the years have included Light, Guide, Friend, All That Is, Listener, Life Force, Divine One, Witness, and many more. If none fit, she suggests asking the Voice its own choice. After all, she tells the reader, no one would want to call an intimate friend by the wrong name.
This is an intensive writing program, ritual if you will. Writing is imperative as a medium, because only speaking one's feelings does not have the same impact. Michelle Colt, a practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming explains why:
"When you write, you use several modalities at once: visual--you see what's on the page, and you also see the events you are writing about in your mind; auditory--you hear yourself talking to yourself in your head, and you can actually amplify that by speaking out loud; and kinesthetic--you feel the pen, the paper, the whole physical experience of writing. That alone--using all three modalities--makes writing very, very powerful." (p.64)
In addition, there is a trust factor. One never knows how another human being will react to the spoken word. Will it be judgmental, accepting, disbelieving? When you write using Conner's methods, it is all between you and the Voice. It is never intended for anyone else's eyes or ears. She suggests making very sure the writing is kept in a secure place.
Conner found the Voice or it found her in the midst of personal upheaval--divorce, custody issues, abuse and financial disaster. She began one day to pour out her soul onto paper--and found she couldn't stop. She admits to "screaming" on paper to the Voice which she began by addressing as "Dear God". Every day, more feelings and more questions and more pleas went down in her notebooks. She filled one after another. She was finally calmed enough to sit back and listen--and she felt the voice make contact. There are times, she says, when the writer can just feel the Voice taking over the pen and writing through her/him. Some of the Voice's more important communications come this way. But there is that element of listening that is very important.
Conner tells people to start where they are--stuck in a rut, having major problems, just needing some guidance about where to go from here. The Voice will find you where you are.
There are only four steps in the program and they are easy to remember--not always so easy to implement, but Conner offers suggestions as to how to proceed. The steps are:
1. Show up 2. Open up 3. Listen up 4. Follow up
This is not a program for those unwilling to commit. It is intensive and could be time-consuming. Of course, like anything else worthwhile, the benefits are directly in proportion to the effort made. Conner offers so many good suggestions and writing prompts for every step of this program that it would be hard not to find something to write about every day. She even has suggestions for what to many is difficult--listening, really listening. It's not a skill often taught, or exercised.
If this sounds like a program for you, and thousands have benefited, Conner has two words for you: Show up!

I didn't know it was my own voice
There is little I can add to all the wonderful reviews on Writing Down Your Soul. What I want to add is that I'm so grateful to Janet for finally allowing me to see who that "voice" really is - it is ME, MY OWN SOUL, MY OWN VOICE. I wasn't listening to myself. "Thank you" isn't enough Janet for giving me back to myself, but THANK YOU! Our own writer's group, the Backroom Writers of Brownsville, CA has read it, done exercies out of it and totally loved it.

profound process for psycho-spiritual growth
If you are feeling lost, or looking for answers and don't know where to turn, this is the book for you. More than simply journal writing, Writing Down Your Soul is a profound process for psycho-spiritual growth: a method for connecting with a source of inner wisdom. What's more it's easy (no writing skills required), can be done in the privacy of your own home, and it works.
Conner calls this wisdom the "Voice," and reminds us that we all have this voice, which lives just below our surface awareness in our mind, heart, and soul. Another writer might call it intuition, or someone else might call it source energy, or God. The name isn't important; it is the act of writing faithfully and soulfully that activates a profound and meditative state, enabling us to hear the still, quiet wisdom inside.
Conner writes from her soul, so we are given a first-hand experience of what that looks, sounds, and feels like--and it is inspiring. Using four basic steps to writing down your soul: show up, open up, listen up, and follow up, the author walks--or rather--talks us through each step, sounding more like a compassionate friend than a stranger. The author draws you in to the unfolding conversations available from your soul -- her reassurance, enthusiasm, and heart wisdom alone stirs us to connect with our own inner guidance and find our own voice home.

Plenty of fun!
I enjoyed filling out this book. This is definitely good if you like filling out surveys and stuff like that or this could make a great gift. I wasn't disappointed at all.

Gets the job done
This was the first book of its kind I ever filled out. I enjoyed answering the questions. I'm one of those types that never kept a diary, so this sort of thing seemed perfect for me. I did find myself wanting something that dug a little deeper than this though. That's probably my only real complaint. If you're looking for a nice little question book for someone you love, this is a good gift idea. If you're looking for something a bit more fun, adult and involved though, I'd recommend How To Love Me by Ali Davis (for couples) or The Secret Me by Shane Windham (the BEST).

no for everyone
I bought this intending to give it to older friends of mine so they chould fill it out for there kids and grand kids. But there are a LOT of sexual questions in there and things NO ONE needs to know about u.

great self discovery book
This book is great for anyone wanting to know more about themselves, to help learn more about someone special to you, or as something to fill in for your spouse/children to read in the future. There are many different topics to fill in and write your memories as well as questions that spur your thinking about where you are now and what you want in the future. I am happy I took the time to do this before I had children and look forward to sharing it with my spouse and children in the future.
Rating :
Compelling
This book makes me want to think deeper, take a break from the superficiality of today. There are many books like this aimed toward the younger age groups, but this is definitely made for the older age groups. It's nice to take time and really think about what you really care about and what you would do differently, if you could.

Journal Bliss an Adventure in Creativity
While so many art journaling guides are full of directions for cut and paste, Violette has taken a step above in creating a book that encourages participants to explore their own creativity. There is nothing more satisfying than creating one's own backgrounds, textures and designs. When all an artist does is cut and paste onto preprinted paper, there is no invention and very little creativity. This book is whimsical, and colorful. Violette encourages the reader to explore their own patterns and artwork to produce new and exciting journal pages.

Awesome!
I purchased this book for inspiration as part of a group of female artists in new York. We have decided to embark on an "altered" book project and I was fortunate enough to come across this amazing artist Violette on line. I haven't been the same since! She is an awesome talent and shares all of her wonderful secrets in this book. I can't put it down. She instills confidence and courage in artists of all ages. It will remain a treasure in my collection and this is one book I can't lend out! As a result of her "lessons and gentle suggestions" I have become absolutely fearless and feel so much more free with my art style. Violette is wonderful and so is Journal Bliss. Every artist should own a copy. A++++++++++++++++++++++++

Editorial Review :
Over 1,000 journal pages presented in one beautiful full-color bookJournals offer their makers a safe place to dream, doodle, rant, and reinvent themselves. They offer viewers rich, visual inspiration. There is a fascination with these revealing and often beautiful pages of self-exploration and personal expression. Journals offer a tantalizing, voyeuristic view of an interior life. This would be the first book to offer examples of over 1000 journal pages in one eye-catching, visual format, and would attract a wide swathe of artists who fully embrace or experiment with this medium. Journaling has seeped into popular culture in a big way and this collection provides a wide array of ideas, techniques and themes to inspire and inform mixed media and journaling enthusiasts.

i'm inspired
after flipping threw the pages, i've become inspired by wonderful works of art in this book

Intoxicating Inspiration
What an opportunity to flip through the artistic journals of so many creative people. This book is all about the images. Not too much verbage, just pure inspiration. Slightly oversized, yet each page contains quite a bit of "white space" to let the pages pop. If you want to actually read everything presented, you will need a magnifier. Seemingly every journaling sytle is validated in this generous exploration of what others are doing in art journals. I will enjoy curling up with this book for a very long time.
Rating :
Disappointed
The book has no text, only pictures. That would be fine except that the pictures are tiny. It's impossible to see the details in the art. A waste of money. Also, this "new" book came with a torn page.

A gem of a book
I have been getting into art journaling myself in the last year and have scoured the internet for inspiration, and found a lot of artists recommending this book.. I didnt know until i received it today in the mail what to expect. It is beautiful - there are so many talented people out there doing what they love and I think its great they are willing to share their work with us - even their journal pages. There is a great range of different ideas and styles to be found... i read someones review complaining that the pictures weren't big enough, i didnt mind the size - at two pictures per page - you can see enough detail and vivid color and still appreciate the whole picture. This book inspired me and that is just the initial thumbing through it. I intend to study it closer asap. It is a great value and a great book!

Journal pages by artists
Worth the price but for me a bit odd as regards the art. I thought it would be 1,000 artists (a big job) but it was several from each artist instead. If I saw it at the store I might not have bought it but if you like this type of art, well worth the price.

Editorial Review :
The idea behind Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is that by writing three pages, longhand and stream-of consciousness, first thing in the morning, you can overcome the obstacles that stop you from becoming your most creative self. This works partly because it forces you to create something (even if it is just a long list of gripes) every single day. It doesn't take much time. You're not even supposed to think. But the act itself gets you past all that self-defeating fretting about why you think you aren't a creative person. Cameron sees her morning pages as "a form of meditation," as "spiritual windshield wipers." While Cameron touts the morning pages as a way of life, she suggests you start out doing them as part of a "twelve-week program to recover your creativity." If you would like to keep your first twelve weeks of morning pages together in one tidy place, The Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal is a fine tool for doing so. Each nearly blank page features an inspiring quotation from The Artist's Way: "Leap, and the net will appear," says one; "Creativity lies not in the done but in doing," reminds another. We should mention that many of these little inspirations include references to God, which may be troublesome even for spiritual atheists. --Jane Steinberg
Customer Review :
Perfect if you are doing the course
This book is mainly blank, interspersed with quotes from the Artist's Way. I love it! It keeps me on track to do morning pages every day and I keep discovering that the quotes coincide with what I'm writing about...great way to stay motivated.
Rating :
Exactly what it's supposed to be
Unlike other reviewers who felt the Morning Pages Journal should offer more than just bound blank pages, I think that it serves that purpose admirably well, and has the added benefit of the quotes from The Artist's Way. The only drawback (the reason I give a 3 rather than a 5) is that it ought to be spiral-bound: if you are writing pages as you are supposed to be (early AM, in bed) then you have to struggle to hold the pages down to write. This is an easy fix that I hope that the publishers will finally clue in to and remedy.
Rating :
I purchased it without reading the book first
A therapist actually recommended that I check out the Artist's Way and write morning pages. She did warn me that there's a religious bent to it, and that type of thing puts me off in general, so I skipped the book and went for the Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal.
It does have an explanation of how the morning pages work, and your weekly artist's date. The journal itself is broken down by week, each week has a one page basic summary of what you're supposed to focus on that week, and provides 3 lined pages per day to write. There are quotes from "The Artist's Way" book itself scattered throughout.
I am under the impression however that you're supposed to write about your artist date in addition to the morning pages, and I've seen weekly summaries mentioned by other people. There is not room provided for this, nor is it mentioned in the book (I'm on week two, so perhaps it comes up later, but I doubt it).
Unlike some reviewers I'm glad that the book isn't spiral bound, I hate those things, they always get bent and I somehow end up with pages falling out. I'm a bit rough on things. It's a bit awkward to write in, but not awful. Just lie the whole thing flat on a table. The surface of the paper is rough, but I like writing on it.
I broke down after the second week and purchased "The Artist's Way" (10th edition) to clarify the things I was wondering about. It did help a lot, however there are also exercises to do each week in addition to the morning pages and the artist's dates. I find that a bit overwhelming actually.
There is also a workbook version of "The Artist's Way" with just the exercises and blank space under them to write. Personally I'd like a full book with lined space for the exercises and morning pages and whatnot all in one place. Perhaps with (re)movable (and/or addable) pages. I understand though that it could be a rather unwieldy book.
I'm actually wondering if I should write "night pages". The morning pages are meant to unload your mind so you can get through the day more efficiently without being dragged down by the dreck in your head. But at night my mind is spinning and I can't sleep. I don't know if I keep doing the morning pages if that will clear up too, or I need to write more at night!
Rating :
Worth the journey
The Artist's Way Morning Journal and the textbook wonderfully provide a 12 week program to develop the artist in you. I am just starting week 6; the last five weeks have been mind-opening and spirit developing. For any person who wants to develop his/her creativity, this book definitely helps. Go for it--it's worth every penny!
