There are plenty of books about coping with adversity. But isn't until now, with WHO SURVIVES, that we discover the human factors that determine survival. It's a combination instruction book and security blanket that blends compelling true stories with cutting-edge science to deliver some of the most important lessons we'll ever need to learn.

The book will:
--list the most important traits necessary for survival (e.g., adaptability, tenacity, faith)
--identify the 5 types of survivors
--debunk myths (like only the strong survive), explore the frontiers of survival science (How much strain and punishment can a human body endure?), and introduce readers to counterintuitive thinking (Ever heard of posttraumatic growth?)
--provide a Survivors Tool Kit, including an online test that measures one's Survivor's Quotient

Each one of us eventually joins the club of millions who face life's inescapable tribulations and tragedies. WHO SURVIVES is the companion we need to prepare us for and guide us through the worst.

Too Much Religion

This book had promise, and has some interesting stories and statistics. But by half way through, every survival story was turning into mystical powers, and God, and Faith. In these stories, it is never questioned why God saved a military pilot, but let the navigator die. Why did God save a particular person in an airline crash or nightclub fire, but he couldn't be bothered to save the rest (let alone prevent the disaster in the first place)? I guess they were evil, or it was "His Plan". Yawn.

If you don't mind being preached at, or if your faith is so flimsy that it needs to be bolstered by a mass marketed book, then this is a good read. If you are sick of these stories, don't bother.

Fascinating. Inspiring. Entertaining.

The SURVIVORS CLUB is a fascinating look into the psychology and complexities of human survival. Drawing on historical examples of people who have survived a wide range of disasters, Sherwood pulls together themes and patterns which are altogether inspiring, revelatory, and fascinating.

Sherwood studies and interviews people who have survived collisions, airplane crashes, attacks, illnesses, and a host of catastrophes which threaten their lives. Some are simply remarkable stories; others are uplifting tales of faith and will; most simply mind-blowing.

So, what are the key factors for survival, for determining who makes it through and who doesn't? The answers seem as varied as the people involved. However, there are some interesting tells:

1. faith - belief in God gives hope, strength and courage. Faith is the opposite (and remedy for) fear, which is a real killer. AS deadly as starvation or disease, fear kills people. It paralyzes, saps the will to live, and eliminates hope.
2. family - having others love you and your love for them provides motivation to live: the will to carry through.
3. preparedness - those best prepared are the most likely to survive emergencies. Having at least considered what-to-do and given thought to it - rehearsal is even more effective- can be a life-saver. That is why the armed forces rehearse many life-threatening scenarios. A body and mind prepared to live is a key indicator.

There are also a myriad of other factors, determination, courage, stubbornness, intelligence, adaptability and so on. Each of us is wired differently but all of us contain some of the key elements for survival. The good news is, survival skills can be learned and improved.

Review written for and published on www.luxuryreading.com

Biking in Foothill Ranch, California, Anne Hjelle is attacked by a mountain lion. She survives the attack. JAT Flight 364 explodes in the air over Czechoslovakia. The only survivor is Vesna Vulovic, a flight attendant, who plummets 6 miles to the ground and lives. Brian Udell is forced to eject from his plane going faster than Mach 1 at sea level. The impact breaks both his legs and severely dislocates one shoulder, rendering that arm useless. Despite having only one working limb, Udell manages to inflate a raft, climb aboard, and wait to be rescued. In the Gulf of Mexico, Tim Sears falls off of the cruise ship Celebration wearing nothing more than his boxer shorts, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Without any floatation devices and without anyone coming to his rescue (the ship's crew never knew he was missing), Sears literally swims for his life over a course of 17 hours where he is finally rescued by a Maltese ship.

What all these people have in common is that they are all survivors of situations that would normally be fatal to the average person. Ben Sherwood, journalist and author, sets out to discover why some people live where others would perish in his book The Survivors Club. Sherwood takes the reader on a tour of the remarkable and the astounding while all along collecting research into the sciences of extreme first aid, faith and prayer, fear, will power, adversity, and luck. He includes countless tales of survival and death defying feats as well as advice from rescue workers and scientists who investigate the various forms of death.

The Survivors Club is more than just a study in the art of survival; it is also a reference manual. Sherwood invites the reader to take a quiz that will provide him/her with a "survivor profile." This individual profile identifies the test taker's "survivor type" (fighter, believer, connector, thinker, or realist) and details the top three survivor tools in the test taker's arsenal. The reader is then invited to join an online community of survivors where members can share their stories and "build a private support group of friends and family."

Ben Sherwood's The Survivors Club is a must read for those who desire a long life and wish to be prepared for all eventualities in life.

Didn't learn much about survival

After seeing the great reviews here, I was excited to dig into the book. I am about 1/3 way through and I'm finding it difficult to continue. Perhaps my expectation were off course. I was expecting a book to give insight into survival skills in different situations. All I got were stories of people who had a desire to live but it was very skimpy on tactical advise. So far the most I got out of this book is where to sit in a plane to perhaps survive a crash. I hope the rest of the book gets better... if so, I will update my review

Great book! I highly recommend!!

I own this audio book and am very glad I purchased it. I don't agree AT ALL with the negative reviews. The author does provide the science of survival. He visited the top experts in their fields of survival research. He even went thru some harrowing survival training himself (let's just say I wouldn't do it). He also gave some good statistics i.e. most people think if you're in a plane crash that everyone dies, when actually there is a good chance you could survive.
Great info, great stories, highly recommended to make a great addition to your library!!

Fantastic!

This is like I wrote it about me, is absolutely fantastic and insightful. Beth Moore opens up her heart and shares so much of herself. I find myself driving down the highway thinking she is describing me. Her deep faith in God and her strong belief that He can lead us to wholeness. It is never too late....to start believing in yourself because God does.

Rating :

Okay but not fantastic!

I set out reading So Long Insecurity with an open mind because, although, I do love Beth Moore bible studies I find them quite cumbersome. She is a fantastic teacher of the Word and has a beautiful anointing in women's ministry. Yet sometimes I feel things a bit wordy and I find my mind wandering off to things like my grocery list.

The truth on which this book is founded I wholeheartedly agree with. That truth being how so many believers know nothing of their identity in Christ and therefore seek to find that identity in other places. One of the entrapment's to living fully in our Christ-given identity is insecurity. We spend a lot of time feeding into it and staying bound by it. When what we really need to do is get set free! Beth does a great job pointing you back to your identity in Christ. Also by helping you to see some of the ways you get caught up in your insecurity without even realizing it.

Although I think the book is quite a bit longer than it needs to be it's still a great read. (Particularly Chapter 8) This would be a great book to give to a friend who may have never been exposed to Beth Moore or her ministry.

For additional support and encouragement you should check out the website for readers of the book.

This book was provided at no cost for review purposes by the publisher. The above is my honest review of the book in my own words.

Handbook to entrepreneurship

The book does read like a mishmash of Tim's addiction to travelling, his frustration with success and money early on and him stumbling upon a successful nutrition company. However this book also sounds like a real unedited account of his life which is why I like this book. This is not too planned to be a certain type of book to appeal to certain type of audience. It turn by turn account of his adventurous life. It is also fair criticism that all Tim did was to establish only one company and he might have gotten lucky. But it is also true that he sold himself as a expert on nutritions and appeared on many TV shows and create d aTim Ferriss brand. And all the other tid-bids if information are priceless...right from outsoucring companies info, internet pay-per-click ad campaign etc. I have listened to his many videos on youtube and on his personal blog and his most recent talk at the TED, and this man is really brilliant and this book just gives a glimpse of his mind.

Three Cheers for 4HWW

The 4-Hour Work-week by Timothy Ferris

In The 4-Hour Work-week (4HWW) Mr. Ferris gives us a four step process to define our dreams and goals, eliminate those aspects of our lives that do not contribute to accomplishing our dreams, automate the appropriate level of revenue to finance those dreams and liberate ourselves from the daily chores of life. He leads us down a path toward freedom, defined by his own standards, that results in sufficient financial autonomy and emotional independence to set one's own life course and pursue it with passion and vigor.

Perhaps I read into 4HWW things that were not there. I see it as a pattern to be followed that, at least for me, will not lead to a life of leisure working a mere four hours a week but to an iterative process. 4HWW offers a business development path toward business ownership in a highly liberated fashion in which key players perform the routine tasks of the business allowing the owner time to pursue other interests. For Mr. Ferris those other interests lie in areas of leisure and personal development. I see it as an opportunity to multiply my own time by repeating the steps to produce a number of businesses each requiring a fractional commitment in terms of time on my own part.

While The 4-Hour Work-week by Timothy Ferris is not five star writing, it is three cheer thinking and certainly worthy consumption.

Genius in looking at things in new ways and helping you see.

Tim's specialty is being able to look at a situation, reverse engineer it and see what, how, and why it is the way it is. Once he knows that he focuses on those factors to do what no one else seems to do. The Genius of this book is he helps you to do the same. The reading, his assignments and his questions help you to look at your own life and you then see what was once thought impossible... actually possible. I loved it, and if it weren't for this book I'd still be at my old job and not my own business. I'm not at a 4 hour work week yet... but I'm getting close!

Probably the best out there on the subject

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is an excellent motivational book for businesspeople or anyone for that matter. There is a multitude of phony, puffy, cheesy and fluffy "self-help" books out there in this department, but I feel that this book really stands out as the one to get. If you read this book and utilize the strategies in it, you WILL see an improvement in your life. Nuff Said.

A catalyst for my quest to just 'be better'

Here is an excerpt from my blog post about working on Covey's 2nd Habit. I hope it will encourage others to take the time to really think about and work through the lessons in this book. I'm not sure I am a more confident or effective person as of yet, but it feels good to 'Be Proactive' (a la Habit #1) and feel like I'm working towards making progress. -- Evonne
[...]

Begin with the End in Mind (Part 1)

I tried writing my obituary today. No, I haven't already decided to give up. It was an exercise suggested by the enduring classic, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It's not a book about `confidence' per se. It is about being an effective and successful person. The philosophy Covey teaches to achieve this end is known as the Character Ethic. The Character Ethic attributes success to fundamental and underlying human characteristics such as integrity, honesty, courage, potential and growth. This is in contrast to the Personality Ethic which calls its followers to focus on personality traits, skills and maintaining a positive attitude among other things to be an effective person and according to Covey this latter approach been unduly popularized throughout the latter half of the 20th century. I don't know which ethic is more correct and I'm not sure that I believe there are only two ways to approach effectiveness. But I think we can all agree that feeling effective and successful are important to feeling in control and confident and I hope to explore both approaches (among many others) in this blog.

In Habit #2: Begin With The End In Mind, Covey suggests that you take a moment to think about what you would want a member of your social network, your family and a community organization that you're involved with to say about you at your funeral.

"Now think deeply," he writes, "What would you like each of these speakers to say about you and your life? What character would you like them to have seen in you? What contributions, what achievements would you want them to remember? What difference would you like to have made in their lives?"

And now here's the real clencher... "Before you read further, take a few minutes to jot down your impressions. It will greatly increase your personal understanding of Habit 2." Damn't.. sigh.. and so I was stuck jotting ideas on a napkin..

(By the way, if you're wondering what happened to Habit #1: Be proactive a.k.a. "work inside your circle of influence" and "if you think the problem is out there, that's the problem". Well, you're looking at it.)

I had heard of this eulogy/obituary exercise before and to be honest it never really resonated with me. I understand that it should highlight what you truly value and help you work backwards to prioritize your life and work towards those goals. But in addition to being, well.. morbid, I also tend to think it gives too much weight to what you want people to think about you. While beginning to ponder the questions, it put me into a manipulative mindset, asking myself how I get my friends/family/etc to say what I want them to say about me. But perhaps this says more about me and my tendencies than it says about the merits of the exercise.

Here are my napkin jottings. Please read as if there is a question mark after every statement because that was the tone of the voice dictating each line in my head. And I apologize in advance for all the cringing you are about to experience...

She was happy. (Remember, read: "She was happy?") She felt lucky. She was surrounded by people she loved and who loved her. People wanted her in their lives. One of the most interesting people I've met. Never dull. You'd never know what she was going to say. She made life interesting. She was brilliant, but almost just as notably, she was curious. People wanted to be around her. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and wanted and accepted. She wanted to understand everything. She wanted to be involved in everything. She was a mathematician, a business woman, a chef and food critic, a planner, a writer, a thinker, a philanthropist, an anthropologist, a strategist, an explorer, an adventurer, a curiosity, a language prodigy, a wonderful friend and loving mother. She had no regrets.

Okay, so I took some liberties here, but be proud of me for actually uploading my unedited scribbles. It's actually (even more) embarassing because I don't think I would've written something much different in 3rd grade.. how far I've come. Don't worry, my ego is not actually this big (and misdirected/delusional) but the exercise instructions didn't say to limit by my actual level of intellect, skills, behavioral tendencies, etc so I ran with it.

While I feel it did point out quite a few of my insecurities and to some extent some of the things I want or think I want in life, again I didn't feel like I was getting to the core of it. I actually wanted to come up with a few things I could feel proud of and live by and work towards instead of taking a 5-minute stab in the dark with my pen and a napkin. But how do I do that? Keep in mind you're asking a 26 year old what she wants in life...

So here is my plan, to be tackled this week (and diligently written about next Sunday, of course). Instead of daydreaming and musing, I am going to take a more systematic approach. Obviously from my scribbles you can tell I have no real idea what a eulogy or an obituary might sound like. And given my limited life experience I haven't had exposure to the breadth of life experiences and character qualities that can be highlighted therein. And just generally I don't know what makes for a meaningful and interesting discussion of a person's life... I've never attended a funeral and if you can believe it, the obituaries are not my `flip-to' section of the NYT. In addition, I have no idea what I could write in a mock obituary for my future self that would feel uplifting and satisfying to my current self right now.

I know I've flipped past countless examples in the obituaries section of the NYT, The Economist, The Atlantic... so I've decided to go back and actually read them. While perusing the web editions of these publications, I found troves of obituaries that I can't wait to read: David Foster Wallace, Bobby Fischer, Laurence Urdang, Yves Saint Laurent, Mary Garber, Charlton Heston. Obviously these lives were selected by these journals because the people who led them were luminaries and pioneers in their time and I don't expect to hold myself to quite as high a standard. But I think this will provide some good fodder and am very interested to learn what will stand out to me, what I will and won't want people to say about me and to eventually help me realize at least a few ideas that I want to internalize and make my own.

Will report back shortly...

"An exemplary and eloquently written story that makes it easy for nonbelievers in intuition to believe. You must read this book." – Psychology Today

Now with a new foreword from the author, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Judith Orloff tells her remarkable life story and teaches you how to recognize and trust your own intuitive gifts to improve your life—and the lives of those around you.

In this updated edition, Dr. Orloff reflects on her career and the sea change that modern medicine and psychiatry have experienced since Second Sight was first published.  She expands her earlier ideas and further explores intuition’s role in maintaining physical health and emotional well-being, using examples from her own and her patients’ lives. This is both a remarkable self-portrait of one woman’s journey toward the acceptance of intuition as a therapeutic tool, and a comprehensive look at how you, too, can develop your intuition, transform your health, and revolutionize your everyday life.

"Orloff is a true visionary. She is the kind of physician we wish we all had." – Caroline Myss, Ph.D., author of Sacred Contracts

"Second Sight is a page turner...controversial. It shares the struggles and successes of a courageous physician who fights against a skeptical medical system to validate the power of intuition. You will find a new friend in Judith as her writing is as intimate as if she was talking to you in her living room." —Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., author of Mending the Mind, Minding the Spirit

"Judith Orloff is a seriously talented storyteller, and her book moves like a thriller...Forgive me this moment of intuition, but this book feels right." –Jesse Kornbluth, Huffington Post

Customer Review :

The Way of Intuition: A Book Review of Second Sight

Dr. Judith Orloff's new book Second Sight, is a fascinating memoir of her journey to come to terms with her psychic intuition. From the time young Judith is a child, she is dreaming and foreseeing future events, the illnesses and deaths of relatives and family friends. As a teenager she has a near death experience during a car accident where she enters the tunnel and sees the light.

Always discouraged by her social-conscious mother, Judith is afraid of her own powers until she becomes part of an experimental research teamin L.A. and meets others with developing psychic powers. Each chapter brings more and more insight into her experiences until she recognizes that all humanity has the power now to cultivate new senses.

I was especially drawn to this book as it is in the same genre as my own memoir. What is important about books in this category is that readers get to validate their own experiences. Many of us are out of the closet now in full support of the new era upon which humanity is embarking, which is actually a return to an esoteric age we had lost touch with. Let me quote Dr. Orloff here as her own words are most prophetic:

"We have come full circle. Our earliest ancestors passed on a rich intuitive heritage: prophets, oracles, shamans, healers make up a vital portion of our history. Yet as the Age of Exploration took off and science became revered, what had been considered natural for so many thousands of years was then labeled superstitious nonsense or condemned as the work of the devil. Seers were deemed to be witches and burned at the stake for their so-called crimes. Later, industry and technology--focused always on rational explanation--drove more nails in the coffin of intuition."

This book is a must read for all of us, those who have tapped into their powers, and those who may find these ideas suspect. Dr. Orloff's life study is documentary proof that seers are not charlatans cloaked in turbans gazing into crystal balls, and her argument is that every one of us can develop highly sensitive intuition that will be useful in medicine and the transformation of our society.

Recently a new review of my memoir, The Future That Brought Her Here; Memoir of a Call to Awaken, was posted on Amazon.com. This person, T. Ruth, said "I am so grateful that Deborah had the courage to share her personal story with the world in such a detailed, thoughtful, honest, loving way." This fan emailed me personally on Facebook to say her husband had also read my book and was anxious to begin developing his feminine side, or the feminine way of knowing. In moments like that I feel so blessed to have had the impulse to share my knowledge and research into human esoteric history.

Judith Orloff calls for the same goal that I encourage in my book, an integration of intellect and intuition. I recommend this book with no reservations. It reads like a novel, an adventure story with an encouraging ending.
". . . now at the edge of the twenty-first century, there is an increasing movement of people who realize how much of our soul we've sacrificed. That split just isn't necessary. Envision a furture where all of our analystical accomplishments and the intuitive work hand in hand--realizing the best of both worlds. That's where I believe we're headed."

Amen, I say to that. And so it is

I Can Breathe Now

It's like I can take a deep breath and relax now. Someone once asked me "How do you feel when you enter a room where there's a lot of fighting and anger?" My immediate response was: "I recoil and want to run out of there." I thought everybody felt this way. Granted we all feel things up to a certain level, but the notion that I feel more than most never occurred to me. Doesn't everyone? I thought. Learning I was not alone in my experiences was a huge relief and revelation to me. When I read Dr. Orloff's book I felt I had found me. I now knew who I was and could now just simply enjoy what once seemed like a curse. Feeling everything like I have been up to date without understanding it is "crazy making." I now realized no, it's a blessing, I have been given a whole 'nother level of awareness and depth. It is powerful. Hearing Dr. Orloff explain it through sharing her life- it blew the barn doors open. She talks openly about all her experiences as well as how she deeply respects her gifts and how she has combined these with traditional methodologies. Yes, there is a feeling of "safety" that she has credentials when reading this, but for me the true safety comes in how Dr. Orloff has chosen to use her gifts and live her life. She deeply respects what she has and is grateful for it. She does not misuse what she has and adds seriousness and credibility to her spiritual gifts.

I bought a copy of this book for my sister as she feels things on the hyper-sensitive scale as I. My sister gets massive migraines and has been taking medication to manage this. After reading Dr. Orloff's story and learned how she went through a phase of medicating herself to "escape" until she new what to do with what she had been given, I related this to my sister. She opened up to me and told me more things that she had experienced as a child. I now hope that my sister will be able to understand herself an accept and enjoy these gifts she has been given.

As far as I'm concerned Dr. Orloff is opening doors for people and allowing everyone to relax as well as respect a whole arena of the human experience that typically gets shunned, and until very recently even went punished. And the biggest tragedy of all is that these gifts have gone unused, denied and ignored by many and dismissed as sillyness or even crazyness of some kind. With this openess and understanding of what is really going on many can now not waste what they have been blessed with and can live incredibly rich, powerful lives. There's nothing to reject or push away. In fact, this is cause for celebration. Thank you for sharing your story, Dr. Orloff.

Tapping into Your Own Inner Wisdom

Don't walk, run to buy Judith Orloff's book. Judith tells her personal story revealing the developmental stages and steps she took in her "coming out" as an intuitive healer.

The author takes professional and personal risk in revealing her intuitive gifts through her story telling. Judith hid her intuitions behind closed doors during her medical training and practice in an attempt to maintain her professional medical image. Judith was born to physician parents who regarded her intuitive gifts as something to be kept secret. As a young woman Judith took part in research that smacked of "woo woo". After medical training she entered into the more conservative aspects of being a physician attempting to block her own nature and ultimately finding that she could not maintain that stance. For her own good and ultimately for the good of her patients (one of whom attempted suicide but lived)she found the her own unique path to acceptance not only claiming her intuitive gifts but sharing them with others as paths to healing and transformative change.

Second Sight Review

I have rarely read a book that has touched me so deeply. This is a story of the journey of one woman who has a gift. She develops this gift slowly, but surely throughout her life. It is the gift of healing, among other things. Judith Orloff takes the reader through her rough teenage years, when she felt like an outcast amongst her peers. She felt her gift made her damaged in some way. Yet she goes through this time with courage and grace.

We already know Judith is a prominent psychiatrist, so I'm giving nothing away by saying that she decided to become one so she could integrate her medical practice with her healing gift. Unfortunately things didn't go exactly as she planned, which she discusses quite aptly in this book.

Her story is unique and her writing is flawless. She teaches us even as she discovers herself through her writing. I learned so much from this book. For one, I learned that everyone has this innate healing ability. I have used it myself and it does work. Judith makes sure the reader realizes that she is not unique in this way. In fact, she encourages others to reach out and try this work for yourself.

I think a lot of people would get a lot out of reading this book. Judith is a courageous woman with much to say about her incredible life and what it has taught her. We see her grow into a very powerful woman and healer. I was hooked by the first few paragraphs, and all the way to the end. She had me mesmerized from the very beginning. Her story is so incredibly unique. I think very few people would regret reading this wonderful story. She is in a league of her own as far as books go. I can't even think of another book that compares to this one. I was highly impressed. Her writing style is unique and you can envision the scenes she paints quite vividly.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly interested in the healing arts.

Lovely insights into the "sensitive" mind

This book reads like a novel and is filled with wisdom besides. I loved reading about Orloff's adolescence in 1960s Los Angeles and what it was like to be the psychic child of two prominent medical doctors. She helped me be grateful for my own intuition and for this gift in others.
