Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years, whether it's through the "Strawberry Letters" segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. These are women who can run a small business, keep a household with three kids in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds lights on concepts and questions such as: —The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man? —How to spot a mama's boy and what if anything you can do about it. —When to introduce the kids. And what to read into the first interaction between your date and your kids. —The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is. — And more...
Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.

Cool Reading - We loved it and we are Married to Each Other!
"Who knew that Steve Harvey, one of our favorite comedians, would also turn out to be a best selling author? Every couple should read and discuss Act Like a Lady early on to see if their relationship will last!"

The problem with the Y chromosome
I was disgusted by most of the advice in this book. I was shocked by his misogynistic views on love and marriage. It's one thing to help a man feel like a man, but what about a woman's wants and needs? "Give up Scuba diving honey- I don't like you doing it. Oh and if you don't have sex like a horny teenager I will find someone else who will- and that is your fault" I was just so disappointed by this book.

Women time to take the "Big Girl Pill" and swallow it. Mr. Harvey does an outstanding job!
This book sat on the desk in my bedroom for approximately a week before I finally opened it. When I finally opened it and start reading it, I asked myself was I really ready to hear what Mr. Harvey had to say? From addressing the DNA of manhood, to explaining how men need to both feel and be validated by their significant others, I found that this book can help a lot of women from making the mistakes directly pointed out in this book with men, and can also assist women who have already made some not so good choices by utilizing the preventive measures Harvey provides. The truth of it all is that what he states cleary makes good sense. Women who are too strong and too indepent constantly running around stating they don't need a man nine times out of ten will not get a man. A woman that continues to make it easy to get the cookies probably want get a man to take her seriously. She will always be labled as the "Fun Girl" until she can get her self together. A woman allowing a man to date her to death without demanding the relationship is taken to the next level will probably end up playing house permanently.
It makes sense but the one thing sometimes women can fear the most is addressing or pushing a situation that may drive there man away. Thanks for stating the following in your book Mr. Harvey, "Don't be afraid to lose him because, If a man truly loves you, he's not going anywhere." You don't know how many of us women need to state those words to ourselves daily just for self assurance purposes. I think that once we can get pass being afraid as women to lay and set the foundation of what we want out of man from the begging just as mentioned in this book, women as a whole will all be much better off. Mr Harvey's litearary self help guide for women is great. Truly it could not have come out in a better time.

Kelly Cutrone has long been mentoring women on how to make it in one of the most competitive industries in the world. She has kicked people out of fashion shows, forced some of reality television's shiny stars to fire their friends, and built her own company-one of the most powerful PR firms in the fashion business-from the ground up. Through it all, she has refused to be anything but herself. Kelly writes in her trademark, no-bullshit style, combining personal and professional stories to share her secrets for success without selling out. Let's face it: this is a different world than the one in which our mothers grew up, and Kelly has created a real girl's guide to making it in today's world. Offering a wake-up call to women everywhere, she challenges us to stop the dogged pursuit of the -perfect life- and discover who we are and what we really want. Then she shows us how to go out there and get it. Much of our culture teaches us to muzzle our inner voice and follow the crowd; Kelly enables us to stop pretending and start truly living. With chapters on how to find your tribe (those like-minded souls who make your heart sing), how sometimes a breakdown is really a breakthrough, and how there is no such thing as perfection, Kelly also shares practical advice, such as how to create a personal brand and how sometimes you have to fake it to make it. Raw, hilarious, shocking, but always the honest truth, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside calls upon you to gather up your courage like an armful of clothes at a McQueen sample sale and follow your soul wherever it takes you. Whether you're just starting out in the world or looking to reinvent yourself, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside will be the spark you need to figure out what you have to say to the world-and how you're going to say it.

Love Kelly, Loved Her Book
This book was great from start to finish. Charming, funny, incredibly insightful--I recommend it for anyone with an interest in fashion, PR, Kelly herself and People's Revolution, or even just going after your dreams and goals, be them career oriented or otherwise.
I finished the book in about three settings, and regularly picked up the phone to read especially laugh-inducing passages to my friends and mother.
Highly recommend, whatever stage of your life you're in. There's a lesson to be learned for everyone.

A good read for Kelly fans.
Being a big fan of almost all Bravo shows, I was glad to read Kelly's book. I have tos say this about her: She is a great/smart business person and someone I can totally relate to. Her book isn't full of useless advice and simply provides a forum for her to tell her readers about her life and ups and downs. A must have purchase.

Kelly is a rude bully.
How could being this rude, self centered and obnoxious ever work in most people's lives? Kelly is in a bubble where it is normal to be mean to the people she feels are below her.

Bold, Memorable, Off-The-Beaten-Track Business and Life Advice for Women
I have to admit that I know barely anything about fashion and had only seen Kelly Cutrone's name mentioned a few times, but I was curious to read this book because I liked the title and it seemed like it could have a promising approach to life and business. And it did!
Cutrone's tome is part memoir, part spiritual guide, part you-go-girl empowerment and part business manual, all in her straightforward, no-holds-barred style. In many ways, it's feminism as take-the-bull-by-the-horns (or take-the-city-by-the-horns), whether she's talking about organizing an art benefit against censorship, raising her daughter solo, or running her business, PR company People's Revolution.
I especially liked that Cutrone cuts through the false notion that spirituality and being a good person is somehow antithetical to success and financial reward. She marries the two and even though it sounds a bit incredible, talks about her past drug abuse and lowest, suicidal moments and how PR, along with spiritual guidance from the woman she calls her guru, The Mother, pulled her back.
It's a quick read but the pull-no-punches lessons and Cutrone's brand of being herself as well as vision for women in the workplace is a refreshing one, and it's certainly entertaining. I especially like that while there's juicy stories, Cutrone isn't trying to sell herself as a publicist or her brands or even fashion or PR as industries (if anything she somewhat warns younger readers away unless they can hack it). Instead she tells how she grew up with an inherent sense of who she was and what she was capable of and learned by doing (and by making mistakes, like serving black icing on pink desserts at an Agent Provocateur party). Her ability to own up to her mistakes and failures while still offering up rules for success is what makes this book so bold and memorable.

The paperback edition of Daniel H. Pink's groundbreaking book, A Whole New Mind. Described by reviewers as "an audacious and powerful work," "a profound read," "right on the money," and "a miracle," the book reveals the six abilities individuals must master in an outsourced and automated world. Several publications named A Whole New Mind one of the best business books of 2005. It is now being translated into 12 languages -- and will appear across Europe and Asia in 2006. For this updated and expanded edition, Pink has added dozens of new tools, tips, and exercises to help individuals and organizations sharpen their right-brain capacities. Find out why Thomas L. Friedman, author of the mega-bestseller The World is Flat, calls A Whole New Mind his "favorite business book."
Customer Review :
A Quick and Engaging Read
In his book, A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink shines a light on the bleak reality facing knowledge workers in the 21st century. Pink opens by explaining the forces causing knowledge workers in the West to compete, and loose, with workers in emerging economies as repetitive tasks are automated or exported to low-cost centers. Throughout the rest of the book, Pink presents six skills (senses he calls them) which he claims will enable the knowledge workers in the developed world to maintain a home-field advantage based on creativity and innovation.
The key senses Pink identifies are Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. Pink explains by developing one's brain to build strength in these areas, more value can be discovered in traditional right-brain focused endeavors. Pink presents how he was able to gain and self-discover in these areas and provides references to outside sources. He has chosen to do this is in a rather unique way. First, he presents an argument for the particular sense. This is usually backed-up with research and an interview with an expert in the field. Pink relays his own personal experiences were applicable. Pink's own stories range from taking a drawing class to walking labyrinths to joining a laughter group. After justifying the key senses, Pink presents a section called Portfolio where resources and concrete, take-away advice are provided for the reader.
While some people might be put off by the subtitle Why Right-Brainers will Rule the Future, potential readers must understand that Pink is not excluding left-directed, logical/linear thinkers from leading prosperous lives in the future. In fact, Pink spends most of the book's pages presenting techniques to unlock a whole-brained thought method. This ties back into main title of the book. Pink is really presenting ideas to move the user away from the left-directed thinking taught in most schools towards using both hemispheres equally.
Where the book does fall short is that it fails to adequately address that whole-brained thinking is not proprietary to a Western Culture attempting to keep jobs on-shore. I feel strongly that design-thinking and good designs must come within the culture its creations are to serve. Indian car designers will not be successful selling one of their designs in North America or Europe. Likewise, car designers sitting in Detroit will miss the nuances of the Indian automobile market and also fail to deliver a compelling product. I use this as an example because it shows that whole-brained, design thinking is regional and not proprietary to the West. If someone was going to read this book and believe that whole-brained thinking would save them in the world economy, I am afraid they would be disappointed. What reading this book is will accomplish is making that knowledge worker more relevant within their own market. This might not seem like a lot, but there are always positions which must remain close to the market and close to the customer. Those positions are difficult to replicate in a low-cost center.
This book should be on the short list of must-reads for aspiring engineers and product developers. If anything, it adds to the knowledge worker's toolkit and gives a junior engineer something to aspire towards in how they approach innovation and creativity. In a time of relatively bleak job security outlooks in a Friedman-esque flat world, Pink's book allows the reader to realize that what goes on between their ears is within their control. Creative skills can be learned and enhanced, even in the most right-directed brain. A Whole New Mind is not a perfect solution, but it gives the reader a jumping-off point for further self-discovery in support of a career focused on innovation.

Fantastic
This is a brilliant book that makes left-brain oriented thinkers rethink. The world is changing rapidly and Pink explains how the 3 A's (abundance, automation and Asia) will continue to change how people live and work. He then explores more complex right-brained "senses" and provides meaningful steps that one can take to help refine them. A must-read.

Whole New Mind, very creative!
A Whole New Mind, by Daniel Pink, was a great look at the way business will be done in the near future. I recently spoke with a business owner who was concerned that a person they just interviewed did not want to work 40 hours a week inside his office. I challenged him to think of ways that this person could maybe work out of their home and maybe take on a few accounts at a time, instead of working for 1 hour a day on all of his accounts. This is the future of our workforce. People are not interested in sitting in cubical's and picturing themselves in a Dilbert Cartoon anymore. It is the creative right-brain world that we are after now, these are the new managers and salesforce that the big boys are going after- the rest of us need to adjust now too!

One of my favorites
My boss made us read this for work, and I was not excited about it. However, once I got into it, this book grew on me. Twice now I have lent this book to a friend and not gotten it back. So, this will be my third copy. I read it again each time.

Just might make you look at the rest of your life differently !
Brilliant! The sort of book that just might make you sit up and look at the rest of your life differently!
Daniel Pink writes about the right brain faculties which will be critical in order to thrive in the future; a future where your product and service offerings need to appeal to the aesthetic sensibilities of the buyers who dismiss features and quality as merely the price of entry to the market; a future where globalization implies that if it can be done overseas, so it will be; a future where automation is law and medicine.
Several years ago, Betty Edwards' "Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain" brought to our awareness the distinction of the nonlinear, intuitive right brain vs the sequential, logical left brain through her best selling book that spoke to artists. Daniel Pink's book brings it closer to businesses.
The book makes the case that the future belongs to pattern recognizers, meaning maker, empathizers. I say it always did. Arguably the seismic shifts of globalization, automation and emphasis on aesthetics in current times have made the need for right brain qualities more pronounced than ever.
Left brained capabilities are necessary but no longer sufficient; those that possess a `whole new mind' will reap the richest rewards says Pink. The book is in itself an excellent demonstration of a wholesome combination of right brained and left brained faculties ; it is excellent story telling never losing sight of the big picture, chapter after chapter analytically and sequentially building the case.
Pink spells out six essential `aptitudes' to master in order to achieve the `whole new mind' - design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning. And goes onto spend a chapter on each. Here below is my fast forward through the six chapters.
Design as in going beyond function and utility. Ability to tell stories that include context and delivered with emotional impact will become important in the conceptual age to distinguish your products and services. Being able to put the pieces by recognizing patterns is Symphony. Understanding what makes others tick, to create relationships is empathy. Play refers to the laughter and lightheartedness that leads to creativity. Meaning is our quest for a purpose in what we do.
I can relate the trends in the software services industry that I come from to each of the six aptitudes Pink talks about. Increased emphasis on the end-user experience, empathy for the user's needs to address their needs, big picture thinking around system architecture, need for leaders to grasp what makes the software engineers tick are all trends we see unfolding as we speak. The need for humor to enhance creativity and man's eternal quest for meaning from work are applicable to any industry.

The Gift of Fear
An Excellent book that everyone should read! There is something in it for all. Every person can relate to this book in some manner of their lives, be it in a personal relationship, tragedy, or work related. I was recommended this book by a long lost friend that I became reacquainted with after a decade of abuse. After reading this heart touching book on a personal note, I found that what I went through could have been prevented if I would have read this several years ago and learned the survival information this book has taught me. I no longer call it a book, I call it a guide. Thank you to Gavin DeBecker for taking your knowledge and putting it out there for the rest of the world to read and learn from. And thank you to that friend who recommended me to read...you changed my life!

A book EVERY woman must read!!!
A read this book when it first came out and loved it. I learned so much about myself, to listen to my insticts and to not walk around in fear. I reread parts of this book often just to remind myself of insticts. Now that it is on the Kindle, that will be even easier. READ it and give it to a friend. It could save your life!!

Helpful insights into intuition, but...
This book is very insightful into how intuition works, and encourages the reader to listen to her or his intuition, with which I totally agree. The book was very informative in that respect, and for the most part, an entertaining read. However, after most of the case histories, I couldn't help but think, "...but then what do you do?" Although the author espouses an anti-gun viewpoint, the many examples of intuition working to warn of true danger actually prompted me to think that having a weapon might be a very good thing in those instances. Yes, recognizing intuitively that you are in mortal danger is helpful, but it doesn't eliminate the danger itself. You are still left to deal with the danger if you are already in a situation in which it can't be avoided. He did offer some advice, such as it's better to approach someone for help rather than wait for someone to offer it, but there weren't as many suggestions as in some other books. He recommends a certain self-defense course, but honestly, most women are simply no match for a man who has no inhibitions about harming another person. Granted, on some occasions intuition can help avoid getting into a dangerous situation in the first place. That we tend to try to explain away our intuition with so-called logic is also a valid and valuable point, and one of the highlights of the book. To penalize the author for lack of a magic defense would be unfair, so I'm rating the book at 4 stars, although the message that intuitively recognizing danger somehow almost solves the problem was a little frustrating after awhile.
The self-promotion mentioned in several other reviews really didn't bother me; his security business experience is one of the reasons he is considered an expert in the field. However, his anti-gun pitch at the end seemed contradictory after so many tales of extreme danger. Gun ownership carries many responsibilities and should not be taken lightly, or by some at all, but to recommend that citizens get rid of their guns just didn't click after reading the rest of the book. The harrowing tales made me want to go buy one and learn how to use it.
I also had mixed feelings about the advice to turn off the news and basically stop worrying about danger because your intuition will be all the warning you'll need. Sounded a little like pie in the sky. Not that constant worrying is a good thing, but as in one case mentioned, if I had to go to my car alone every night in a large deserted parking lot, I would find it hard to put the possibliity of danger out of my conscious mind, too, even if I had a basic problem with living in LA. Perhaps a fine line separates wariness and worrying.
The book is still definitely worth reading and has good chapters on subjects such as stalking.
Rating :
Mandatory Reading
This book is mandatory reading for everyone. Period. Yes, it's subject matter is confronting and one we'd all rather not have to deal with. But the reality is exactly the opposite. EVERY single person on the planet will be affected by violence at some point in their life. If not themselves, someone they work with or live with or care about. What is so incredible about this book is that whilst the subject matter is about violence, it really is actually a manual of discovering more abilities we possess as human beings that we never knew we had!! This book was like someone telling me I had an extra set of arms at my disposal that I was blindly unaware of! This book is about being more human and ironically it sits proudly on the same shelf as any of my best personal development books i own.
I grew as a person by reading this book. I have shared this with family and friends and they too have told of how it has transformed them for the better.
If you have never read this book then please just do it now. It is guaranteed to radically change the way you see yourself, the world and everyone else in it; sometimes for a little worse .. but ultimately for the best.
Rating :
This book will save lives
The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals that Protect us from Violence is a groundbreaking book that will remain a classic among books on this subject. Having first read this book in 1997 I find that 13 years later I still refer back to this book regularly and recommend it in almost every safety and survival training class that I instruct. Gavin de Becker is the nation's leading expert on predicting violent behavior and he continues to lead the way in his field of study.
The beauty of the Gift of Fear is that we all have "intuition" and "gut feelings", it is what we do with these feeling that can determine whether the outcome is tragic or uneventful. The book teaches you to never ignore such feelings and that our intuition is an early warning sign that something IS wrong. Human beings are the only creature on the planet that will ignore this sense and oftentimes it leads to tragic outcomes. The beauty is that you don't need to buy a gadget to tap into this resource...you are born with it and all you have to do is listen to it and acknowledge it. Our world is filled with signals of danger yet many, if not most, people go about their business with a complete lack of situational awareness. Oftentimes these people present themselves as optimal targets by looking down at the ground when they walk, shoulders slumped, avoiding eye contact, etc. We have people completely oblivious who are walking around listening to their MP3 player, iPod, or talking on their cell phones. All of these distractions make such individuals inviting targets for the predators in society. Having situational awareness to know what is going on in your environment allows your intuition to provide you an early warning signal that something is wrong which in turn allows you to acknowledge the feeling and then ACT accordingly. The Gift of Fear will provide you will the necessary information to act accordingly. Buy this book, read it and then make your loved ones read it! Yes, it is that valuable.

Deeply Moving Treatise. Focuses on the Big Picture
One of the most deeply moving books I've read. He focuses on the big picture in our lives, something so many of us fail to see until we're confronted by mortality. His students were indeed privileged to hear him first hand, and to experience his final moments. The Last Lecture

Focus on Living, not Dying
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." --Randy Pausch
A professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon, Dr. Pausch had prepared to give his "Last Lecture" before he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He determined to use this venue to speak to his children and his wife, because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think." This intimate and insightful little book was prepared from the lecture that he gave, a combination of personal biography, lessons learned as a student and teacher, child and parent, with some heartfelt and practical advice on making the most of living. The chapters are very short, with intriguing titles like "In Fifty Years, It Never Came Up" (when he learned by accident of his dad's heroism in WWII).
There is much to be gleaned from this tiny tome. My only real disappointment with the book is, as I am person of deep faith, I wish he had shared more of this perspective in his writing. He indicates near the end of the book that he considers faith a very personal matter and, as such, chose not to share it in his Last Lecture, which he titled "Really Discovering Your Childhood Dreams."
